Speed Alerts

The iGO navigation app incorporates it's own speed limits for roads and GPSIS has set the default tolerance for exceeding the iGO speed limit to 105%.

The Outback Navigation Information System (ONIS) also features an optional integrated Geofence Speed Alert system (N/A in Personal Mode) to assist the driver in managing vehicle speed (see below).

GEOFENCE SPEED ALERTS

This feature is N/A in ONIS Personal Mode.

The Outback Navigation Information System (ONIS) features an optional integrated Geofence Speed Alert system which comprises of data files containing configured Geofence records by the customer with locations and associated speed limits.

The Geofence Speed Alert mode will alert the driver when the speed exceeds the predefined Geofence data record.

The Geofence Speed Alert mode :

  • displays a yellow background when the Geofence mode is enabled & active

  •  displays a grey background with a yellow outer yellow square border when the Geofence mode is enabled and the vehicle is not in a Geofence active area

  • displays a yellow background with a value when a Speed Alert is found for the current location.

  • displays audio & visual Speed Alert or Speed Alarm messages when the vehicle speed is above the Geofence Speed Alert limit

  • can be configured (in the setup mode) as single or continuous audible alert messages as voice or beep, when the vehicle speed is above the Speed Alert limit

  • can be configured (in the setup mode) to have a default maximum value of 100 or 110 km/h

  • can be configured with a base value between 10 km/h and the maximum value, in increments of 10 km/h

  • has speed tolerance values ranging from 0 km/h to +3 km/h, and the combination of the base and tolerance values is summated to provide the Speed Alert value displayed on the screens and used as the threshold for driver warnings. e.g. a manual setting of 60 km/h with a tolerance of +1 km/h will set the Speed Alert to 61 km/h

  •  the ONIS owner can disable the tolerance setting option (refer to Owner Options).

  • can be set as "enabled" or "disabled" as the default, when the ONIS starts up

  •  can be disabled by the driver from the Speed Alert setting menu (the owner can override this function, if required)

  • can only become active if the vehicle speed is not greater than 25 km/h above the Geofence setting. This reduces the Speed Alert alert messages when traveling on minor roads with a low speed limit adjacent to main roads, both of which are in the same Geofence boundary.

The Geofence Speed Alert system features either a Speed Alert message or a Speed Alarm message if the vehicle exceeds the Geofence ONIS speed limit.

  • the Speed Alert message advises the driver that the vehicle is exceeding the ONIS speed limit and allows the driver to view the map and /or set another limit (dependent on owner options). The audible warning can be configured by the driver as "once" or "continuous", and "beep" or "voice".

  • the Speed Alarm message is a Speed Alert that has been configured as "critical". A Speed Alarm will display a full screen message blocking all ONIS functions whilst still displaying the current vehicle speed and the current speed limit. An audible message will also be broadcast at maximum volume and the message will repeat every 2 seconds (approx.) until the vehicle speed is reduced or the vehicle leaves the Geofence critical zone.

User Geofence data records can be configured by using the inbuilt capture tool or using a PC connected to the ONIS, and the import/export tool. The Geofence records can be set as Alert or Alarm)

System Geofence data records are secured and only configurable by ONIS administrator (with information provided by the customer) and installed during the build process.

System Geofence data records will take precedence over User mode entries if both are found for the same current Geofence location.

We recommend only using the Geofence Speed Alarm setting for areas of critical impact to persons or equipment which can be determined by using the risk assessment process.

eg, Geofence speed limit settings in a car park frequented by pedestrians may warrant the Speed Alarm setting in preference to the Speed Alert setting.

eg, Geofence speed limit settings in a process area where vehicle impact would cause catastrophic impacts on production, may warrant the Speed Alarm setting in preference to the Speed Alert setting.

We recommend only using configuring the System Geofence data records if the data WILL NOT change for the life of the ONIS.

The ONIS tools are easy to understand and use, however Geofence Speed Alert management in general can be complex and we recommend some training in this area to ensure a robust implementation.

Speed Alert Setting Menu

The driver can manually set the tolerance or enable / disable the Geofence Speed Alert function.

Example - Geofence Speed Alert Active

A yellow background for the speed limit and a value indicates that the driver is in a geofence area of 40 km/h.

As the driver is travelling at 44 km/h, the over speed message is displayed.
